Brush-up a little on your BV knowledge...

Welcome Back to Lance Wallach's Business Valuation Blog!

If you're looking to brush up on your knowledge of business valuations, read on!
We'll keep posting more information for those of you looking for a valuation consultant or who want to know, "Why do I need a business valuation?"

BUSINESS VALUATIONS ARE THE FASTEST GROWING SEGMENT OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTING
You’ll find yourself looking desperately for professional business appraisal services when it comes time to make critical decisions about your private business. Americans are battling litigation issues on a daily basis, ie. divorcees who co-own a business. These couples will need a certified business appraiser to evaluate and split their assets fairly and accurately.  Some U.S. business owners are merging with another company, or looking to sell their business, and need an answer to the most important financial question for a private company owner, “what is my business worth?” There is a long list of appraisal services that involve litigation support, buy/sell agreements, financial forensics & fraud investigations, mergers & acquisitions, audit support services, etc.

A BRIEF HISTORY: THE FIRST VALUATION PRINCIPLES
The first valuation principles were established in the 1920’s. Tax rulings within the judicial system were primarily responsible for the rapid growth of certified business appraisers. The development of these principles over the next 60 years is what caused business valuations to become a profession. Since 1987 when the appraisal foundation established Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practices (USPAP), valuation firms have been popping up all over the United States. Because the growing number of credentialing organizations and trained professionals has dramatically increased, the profession has improved its quality standards. In order to meet the demand for valuation, experts and consultants offering appraisal services have increased their number of firms across the United States.

WHO IS A VALUATION CONSULTANT?
A valuation consultant is typically a certified financial analyst or (CPA) certified public accountant. A CPA/ABV is a certified public accountant with credentials in Accredited Business Valuations (ABV). They use a SSVS (Statement for standards of valuation services) to improve consistency and quality among AICPA members performing business valuations. Today, business valuation companies nationwide are prepared to give you hard numbers, real comparables, and sales transaction data.

Happy Valuating!
